Measurement of the Weight per-Unit-Area Distribution of the Mat, Before the Hot Press The forming section for MDF & PB does not always distribute the fibers uniformly. Normally, there is some fluctuation in the weight per-unit-area across the mat. The reasons for this vary based on wood species and technical limits of the machinery. Consequences of the fluctuation are increased press time, overweight, and/or lack of quality. Minimum press time results from the mat location with highest weight per-unit-area; plus tolerances direct to unwanted, long press time. A traversing weight per-unit-area gauge controls the mat across the mat width and given that data information, it is possible to maintain small forming tolerances and prevent over dimensioning. During the start phase of a production line, it can be helpful to see the weight profile, lengthwise of the forming. The movement of the measuring head across the mat can be stopped any time, in any position, over the mat.
